I have heard both sides of the argument - those being either that a photo should remain entirely untouched - that it should come out the way you intend or be abandoned. I have also heard the argument that no photo is perfect and every image needs extensive editing.
I stand somewhere in the middle of this debate. I do agree that no image is perfect, however I disagree that there always needs to be intensive editing. It depends, of course, on the nature of your project and the product you intend to market. I know some people who intensively manipulate every photograph. I myself love to use HDR for landscape and architectural photos. However, I do prefer a more natural approach when it comes to sports and portraiture. I like to use the backlighting option in Photoscape to bring forward my subject but other than that, I rarely touch up action shots.
